Tutorial – Calendrier de l’Avent / Advent Calendar

Donc chose promise chose dûe voici le tuto gratuit du calendrier de l’avent que j’ai fait cette année.
As promised here is the free tutorial of the advent calendar I have made this year.

Ce qu’il vous faut :
J’ai utilisé essentiellement des chutes de tissus qui trainaient dans mes placards mais si vous souhaitez suivre les instructions à la lettre, j’ai utilisé…
50x140cm de feutre rouge
40x60cm de tissu polaire ivoire
du fil blanc
de la peinture pour tissu ivoire
1 feuille de papier transfert spéciale imprimante
10x120cm de cotonnade ivoire/blanc
10x120cm de tissu vichy rouge et blanc
10x120cm de lin naturel
du ruban blanc et du ruban rouge
4 petites pinces ardoises
1 tube en métal lourd/du riz
48 bonbons daims
4 feuilles A4 de deux couleurs différentes
des ciseaux
des perles/faux diamants
de la colle

What you need :
I have mainly used leftovers from my cupboards but if you want to follow word for word my explanations here is what you will need…
50x140cm of red felt
40x60cm of ivory fleece
some white thread
some ivory fabric paint
1 transfer sheet for printer
10x120cm of ivory/white light cotton fabric
10x120cm of white and red gingham cotton
10x120cm of natural linen
some white ribbon and some red
4 little chalkboard pegs
1 metal tube or some rice
48 dime chocolate
4 A4 sheets of two different colours
scissors
pearls fake diamonds
some glue

J’ai commencé par faire quelques dessins que j’ai numérisés et colorisés. Je les ai ensuite imprimés sur un feuille A4 de papier transfert pour imprimante. Suite à quoi, j’ai découpé chaque dessin séparément et je les ai ensuite appliqués au fer à repasser sur le morceau de cotonnade blanc/ivoire. J’ai dessinée et peint à la main deux elfes de noël directement sur le tissu mais si cela vous fait peur vous pouvez aisément ne pas les mettre.

I started to draw a few christmas figures that I then scanned and colorized. I then printed them on a A4 transfer printer paper sheet. After what I cut each drawing separately and applied them on the white cotton fabric with an iron. I have drawn and handpainted two elves directly on the fabric, but if it worries you can easily not do them.

J’ai surfilé tous les morceaux de coton blanc avec les dessins. Ensuite j’ai coupé des carrés/rectangles de tissu vichy et de lin plus ou moins au hasard mais de manière à être plus grand que les images. J’ai effilé les bords des morceaux du lin en tirant sur les fils à l’aide d’une épingle et j’ai surfilé les morceaux de tissus vichy. Puis j’ai assemblé les trois pièces (vichy, lin et le dessin en coton) pour toutes les images en surpiquant tout autour du dessin le tissu blanc sur les deux autres épaisseurs de tissus. Arrive donc le moment de préparer les poches où vous glisserez vos petits cadeaux/chocolats/messages. J’ai coupé 24 rectangles de 6x7cm dans le tissu de feutrine.

I overlocked all the pieces of white fabric with drawings. I then cut roughly squares/rectangles of the gingham and linen, I just made sure they were bigger than the drawing pieces. I fringed the edges of the linen using a pin and I overlocked the gingham pieces. In the end I put together the three pieces (gingham, linen and cotton drawing) for every single image by topstitching all around the drawing on the white fabric on top of the two other layers. And now is the time to prepare the pockets where you will put your little presents/chocolates/messages. I cut 24 rectangles of 6x7cm in the red felt fabric.

Pour le fond j’ai coupé deux grands rectangles, un de 45x65cm dans le tissu de feutrine rouge et un de 40x60cm dans la polaire ivoire. Après avoir épinglé la polaire de façon bien centrée sur le feutre, je l’ai ensuite surpiqué tout autour à environ 1cm du bord.

For the background, I cut two rectangles, one of 45x65cm in the red felted fabric and one of 40x60cm in the ivory fleece fabric. After pining down the fleece on the felt, making sure it was well-centered, I topstitched the fleece all around at about 1cm from the edge.

C’est alors que j’ai tout positionné sur le fond, dessins et poches pour être sure que tout passerait. J’ai pris une photo, puis retiré les poches rouges et épinglé les images.

At this stage, I postionned both images and pockets on the background to make sure everything would fit. I took a picture, removed the red pockets and pined down the images.

J’ai surpiqué chacune des images en suivant les contours du morceau de tissu vichy à la machine (pour les plus patientes un point à la main sera parfait !). J’ai de nouveau positionné les poches rouges et cette fois-ci je les ai épinglées sur le fond.

I topstitched the images on the background by following the edges of the gingham pieces. I used a sewing machine but if you have enough patience you can also sew them by hand. I then placed back the pocket and pinned them down on the background.

Comme pour les images j’ai surpiqué les bords des poches à 5mm du bord du tissu. J’ai par contre fait courrir deux fils blanc dans mon aiguille pour ces surpiqûres et j’ai élargit la longueur de la couture pour qu’elles soient bien visibles. (attention deux fils d’une autre couleur et un point long feront apparaître d’eventuels défauts de couture).
Suite à quoi j’ai peint à la main chacune des poches avec son numéro. J’ai laissé sêcher 24h.

As for the images, I topstitched the edges of the pockets at 5mm. In this case I used two white bobins running in the needle and widened the stitch I used to make sure the stitches will be more visible. (be careful two threads of a different colour and a long stitch will make any sewing default more appealing).
After what I handpainted the numbers on each of the pocket. I let it dry 24hrs.

Le jour suivant j’ai fait les attaches, ce calendrier étant destiné à être accroché sur une porte, j’ai coupé dans la feutrine, deux rectangles 60x10cm et un de 34x10cm. J’ai plié les trois rectangles de sorte à ce qu’ils ne fassent plus que 5cm de large et je les ai cousu tout du long. Je les ai ensuite retournés de sorte à faire trois tubes. J’ai fixé les deux plus longs de manière perpendiculaire au bord du haut du calendrier. Tout en haut de l’un des deux tubes de feutrine j’ai cousu de manière perpendiculaire l’extrémité du tube de 34cm de long, j’y ai glissé un tube en métal rempli de riz (j’ai bouché les extrémités avec de la patafix) puis j’ai assemblé l’autre extrémité au second long tube de l’autre côté. -Vous pouvez également mettre uniquement du riz dans le tissu pour faire un poids.-
J’ai rapidement cousu deux petits morceaux de ruban faisant le lien entre les deux tubes de feutre sur lesquels j’ai mis quatre petites épingles à linge ardoise. A la craie j’y ai inscrit l’année.

The following day, I made the attachments, since this calendar was aimed at being hung on a door, I cut three rectangles in the felt, two of them 60x10cm and one 34x10cm. I folded the three of them to make them 5cm wide and I stitched them all the way. I turned the fabric to get three tube. I stitched the two longest ones perpandicularly to the top of the calendar on each side. I sewed the third one perpendicularly on one of the longest branch and then filled it with a metal tube that I previously filled with rice (I made sure the rice would stay in the tube by blue tacking the edges of the metal tube). I finally stitched the two edges of open felt tubes together. -You can also fill the felt tube with rice directly to give weight.-
I quickly sew two pieces of ribbons to connects the two tubes of felt in each side. I attached the four chalkboard pegs on which I wrote down the year.

Votre calendrier de l’avent est désormais assemblé et doit tenir aisément sur une porte. C’est le moment de le garnir. Pour ma part j’y ai mis deux daims (un pour moi et un pour callixte) et j’ai rajouté 48 messages, 24 que j’ai rempli pour Callixte et 24 que lui a préparés pour moi. Pour ne pas se tromper de message nous avons chacun une couleur de papier!

Your advent calendar is now put together and should easily stand on a door. It’s time to fill it. I decided to put 2 dime chocolates in each pocket, one for Callixte and one for myself and we also added 48 messages, 24 I wrote aimed at Callixte and 24 that he wrote for me. To not get confused we each have a colour of paper !

Voilà !!

Y a plus qu’à attendre noël maintenant !
